Melbourne Guitar Courses Aural training

Melbourne Guitar Courses Aural training

When we learn to play the guitar, we learn how to coordinate in relation to a specific time frame; notes and chords must be played in  a sequence, this sequence is generally a slave to a constant pulse:  the tempo.

If a student can target a note, or a chord, because they are able to anticipate the sound, they will tend to learn in a quicker manner, than those who target only specific mechanical position.

It is important to always anticipate and hear, what we are going to play. This approach is also most enjoyable, and precise muscle coordination will occur at a quicker pace.

Libros de música

I consider the art of accompaniment a reflection of a conscious arrangement of a composition;  clusters, fourth note chords, background lines( passive, active, melodic, harmonic) and much more.

These are some of the tools an arranger must have on a day to day basis, to be able to deliver an understable exposition of a melody to the audience. Please read more  “Libros de música, el Arreglo un Puzzle de Expresion  Musical”

Melbourne Guitar Courses starting May 4

Melbourne Guitar Courses starting May 4

I have scheduled to start all Melbourne guitar courses on May 4.  At present, there is availability left for the following guitar group courses; all groups have 4 students, students that study privately, may by appointment, attend any group class.

 Guitar Level 1

  • One slot, Mondays at 6pm
  • Another slot left,  Tuesdays 6pm
  • One slot, Wednesdays 6pm

Creative Guitar Level 2

  • One slo,t Wednesdays 7 pm

Creative Guitar Level 3

  • One slot, Thursdays 7pm

I require al new students to undergo a short interview, so I may asses their skills for all Melbourne Guitar Courses starting May 4. I always like to  understand not only what a student knows, but also how they learn music, in the most effective manner. Some times, we tend to be more receptive to visual than aural cues.

Music learning will always require strong music recognition skills; students must also constantly develop performance skills, that will allow them to develop melodic and rhythmic variations of the composition, they choose to perform.

Melbourne Guitar Courses starting May 4

Music is fun

I like to play music because I enjoy myself and I am also able to share this enjoyment with others. I like to share with my students the general need of giving and receiving in life. We tend to enjoy music much more when we are able to give something we create, and perform it to others, as if it was a true gift that will be received with love; as a consequence, anxiety and other emotions that might impede this flow, disappear.

Upcoming Melbourne Concerts

I will be commencing my yearly series of Melbourne Concerts, this coming June. I will be producing the majority of the concerts, at the Armadale Uniting Church; showcasing prominent Australian World Music artists.

Ramirez Guitars 1962

Ramirez Guitars 1962

As mentioned in previous posts, this month of September I am recording my new album in the Spanish pyrenees and Barcelona. These mountains, their people and culture have been very inspiring for all my guitar compositions. I am also very pleased to be recording with my Flamenco Guitar, Ramirez Guitars1962. A hand made guitar from the Ramirez family.

Ramirez built these 1962 guitars to work with low tension nylon strings. Gut strings replaced nylon strings  in that era.

ramirez guitars 1962

 Equal temperament tuning.

What I find so curious about this guitar is the way it tunes. Guitars do not follow natural tuning. They are modified to be able to create equal temperament tuning. Contemporary luthiers construct guitars with mathematical machine precision. Even though they do not sound so well, they sometimes tune better. The same note in different octaves is proportional in it´s wave length

However, in older guitars, the luthier would fine tune the fret layout by ear. The luthier would lay down the frets in a manner where octaves were in tune in the same position of the neck. A chord in a high position would be in tune in relation to all its notes, but not to other chords in a lower register.

The resulting sound is spectacular and extremely natural.  The Ramirez guitars built in 1962 were amongst the most desired of the era. They were sought after by flamenco and classical guitarists as: Paco de Lucia, Manolo Sanlucar, Narciso Yepes, amongst others.

Jazz Flamenco Blues and more

Creativity: Jazz, Flamenco, Blues and more

I adore Bach´s music. The way his melodies tangle and untangle as the compositions develops. It creates constant excitement and flow of emotions. Contemporary music with improvised touches allows for melodic and harmonic textures. This is a consequence of such improvised interaction amongst musicians.

Jazz feeds on this need of improvised interaction, to create a genre of music in touch with our constant change of inner emotions. My music tends to share space and time with others. I wish all musicians who I play with, to explore their personal space and add their self-expression of well-being, to the love music been created.

I welcome all of you to join us at our upcoming Melbourne world music concerts.

Creative guitar learning, well being self expression

Creative  guitar learning, well being, self expression

Jimi Hendrix before birth

After 40 years of playing music, understanding how it works and sharing such with others, through education, I reach the conclusion that,  Jimi Hendrix,  and other musicians of his caliber, were born with the musical knowledge implemented in their DNA.

As a mere mortal,  I have had to struggle to understand his talent, and somehow transfer that knowledge into my own form of personal expression, that at the end of the day makes me very fell happy as a musician. So,  40 years down the road,  I have put together an outline that all musicians and guitarist should master,  to reach that level of musicianship and personal satisfaction.

Each level, upon completion, will make you feel better about yourself and your playing.

The levels are:

The more you learn, the more you can express and the better you will feel upon such goal. Music allows us to be. To be is to breathe in balance with nature, making sure we are not bombarded or  distorted by all those elements that generate hate. Come and join me on your personal journey through music with my creative guitar learning method.

For all music lovers I wish to invite you to my next  Melbourne concert to be held on June 24th at 7pm at the Armadale Uniting Church

Also please take a peak at my website. I have organized my compositions in categories of feelings. Please have a listen and leave a comment about the feeling it generates in you and I will classify accordingly.

Student guitar compositions arrangements

Student guitar compositions

All students are encouraged to compose as a method of increasing the speed of their learning. It is fun and stimulating to hear how your thoughts come to life through music. Students write songs at all levels at the creative guitar school.

student guitar compositions

I consider music learning to be similar to learning a language. We only make sense of what we know if we are able to communicate with others our thoughts. That is why we write essays at school. A composition is a sort of an essay. It allows us to structure our expression and there for further understand that of others.

These are some of my beginner student guitar  compositions that I would like to share with you.

It just feels great to see how students, in only 10 weeks, from scratch, are able to play and compose their own songs. Students smile and smile. I love  it.

This song was composed by a young girl of 12. I find it very pleasing and fresh

A guitarist can be very creative at all levels of playing ether as a soloist or as part of the rhythm section. Frankly,  it can become quite boring  to recite only music written by others. When we play, we must make the music ours. That is the advantage of understanding through the guitar how music works:  tempo, harmonic  structures, phrasing , motif development. The more we understand what we are playing,  the more we can modify the music, to suit our way of feeling and thinking and as a consequence, the more fun we will have. We can have as much fun as the most talented artist with our limitations and virtues.

I would like to invite guests to read through all my courses, and learn the advantages of studying music and guitar, in a manner where self expression, creativity and consequent well being,  are the goals at all times.

Musical Barbecue: Great performances and paellas

Musical Barbecue

On June 29th the Creative Guitar School hosted it´s annual Musical Barbecue. We devoured Paella, sausages, noodles, tortillas, and tasty food from Sri Lanka, Vietnam,  Hong Kong, Spain and Venezuela. The event finalized with a concert where students performed in a supportive and friendly atmosphere.

Jazz, funk, flamenco, classic rock, and contemporary pop were some of the main musical styles staged at our evening concert.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is my guitar school mission to make sure all  students get to feel the pleasure of performing live , either their own music or that of others, in a supportive friendly environment.

Live music is a fun social experience and we all deserve to have fun especially after a year of hard work putting together our repertoire. I must insist that if you like to play, you will play and will have fun. Of course we must not forget another explosive highlight of the day where 40 guitar lovers with music as a common need share a table full of home cooked meals.

Thank you everyone for making this day so special. We must all get ready for our next summer show. Students will team up in duos and trios  and fill the air will wonderful music once again. I will make sure their is plenty of paella to keep our creative inspiration going for hours on end.

Creative Guitar Accompaniment

Creative Guitar Accompaniment

I would like to share with you all a video where I showcase how I approach creative guitar accompaniment on the electric guitar in pop, funk and jazz styles. In the video I accompany the vocalist Christina del Mundo from my Melbourne Acoustic Duo (Jazzy Pop)

As taught, throughout my guitar courses, the role of the accompaniment is to define the beat, the groove and the harmony. We do so by creating a constant variation of melodic rhythmic and harmonic tension.

How?
When we accompany in a specific style we have the option of creating bass lines, reharmonizing, adding rhythm, melodic tensions and dynamics. For such we need a solid notion of harmony, chords and chord scale relationships.

I like to play the electric guitar softly which allows me to produce a greater difference between loud and soft passages therefore adding greater emotional contact to my performance.

The guitar, both electric and acoustic, sing better if played softly. It does seem a contradiction but if you hit the strings with extreme force, the sound will not project. When we hit the string hard, the amplitude of the vibration is compressed as the string hits the fretboard. Hence the guitar will produce a lower relative volume than expected.

The guitar is recorded with a Shure 58 microphone. In the mixing session slight compression was added to increase attack. No other effect was used. The amplifier used is a Vox Valvetronic which costs around 350 dollars. I must point out that the sound comes most from the way you play the guitar. In other words the person is the core element of the sound.

Please enjoy the video and subscribe to my you tube channel to further enjoy my creative output.

In this channel there are further educational videos and live performances with my acoustic, Spanish and electric guitar in a variety of genres and formats as: Flamenco, Jazz, Pop and World Music.

Thomas

Spanish Guitar Music-Vocal Quartet

The Creative Guitar School. Melbourne Guitar lessons and courses.
Shine, Be Unique.  Don´t Imitate

Bailas. New Album. Spanish Guitar Music Vocal Quartet. Melbourne

Bailas is one my latest compositions that I have released on Itunes as Thomas Lorenzo. Please accept my invitation and preview the track embedded above.

I have chosen in this case as instrumentation for my arrangement a vocal quartet that I generally perform with and the Spanish Guitar,  also known as the nylon string guitar.

The character of this Spanish guitar music composition is minimalistic in nature. All melodic lines you hear are of great predominance. This is achieved by doubling all such melodic lines and also by avoiding simultaneous prominent sustained harmony in both back ground or foreground melodies.

You will notice that the guitar is not playing chords in a traditional manner. I do not just strum chords. Quite the contrary. I love to feel then tension the chords can create by defining them through melodies.

The Spanish Guitar,  in this case a flamenco hand crafted Hermanos Conde,  has great carrying power in all ranges. Overtones and harmonics allow for single note accompaniment to be heard with clarity within a vocal quartet.

Spanish Guitar Music

In this composition of Spanish Guitar music The vocal harmony is diatonic and triad in nature. My arrangement has given more consideration to vertical resolution of melodies than horizontal definition of chordal structures. The maximum tension towards the end of the composition is created by exploring extreme registers while the vocal quartet underlines the basic major or minor sound in thirds.

I adore vocal harmonies and enjoy performing in this format that allows contrast to the non sustained character of the guitar. The guitar is more of a percussive instrument producing shorter sounds in comparison to those a lyrical instrument as a violin or voice can produce.  The sustained vocal lines allow me to create a harmonic pad that the guitar cannot create on it´s own.

At my Guitar school here in Melbourne we  explore Spanish Guitar music and also the electric and or acoustic guitar in all styles and settings reflection of our contemporary music scene.

The guitar is a very versatile instrument allowing us to develop our inner creativity  composing sounds, harmonies and melodies that reflect our personal vision of well being.

Join us at the Creative Guitar School here in Melbourne Eastern Suburbs. Shine and be unique in your playing .
